Badminton is a great couple sport and one that can be a lot of fun, whether you’re trying it for the first time, or you are both seasoned pros! Among couples sports, badminton is easily one of the most accessible. So whilst others are thinking of romantic valentines activities to do together this February, why not change it up and get active together…on the court!
Here are six reasons why its the perfect activity for couples:
Show Your Partner Your Passion. If badminton is something you’re really passionate about, sharing it with your partner is a great way to open up a little part of your world they don’t normally see. Likewise, for you, it means they are also taking an interest in your activities and supporting your passion. This helps bring you closer together and maybe you’ll even end up sharing the court together! And showing your partner something you’re competent in, they don’t normally see…that’s sexy!
Play On The Same Team. In badminton, you can partner up with your significant other and make it a fun double date with another couple. It can be a great bonding session with the two of your working towards a common goal of beating the other pair! Particularly satisfying if your opponents are one of those annoying couples who are always trying to one-up you.
Play Against Each Other. Maybe you guys thrive more on competing against each other. No problem, just switch sides! This can be done as singles or as doubles! Depending on your partner’s personality, be prepared for laughter, annoyance, poor sportsmanship but all in good humour! Think Monopoly that last time you played together and you lost it when you landed on Mayfair and your partner had that hotel there…ok maybe you shouldn’t play against each other!
Teach Your Partner. If your partner is a beginner, you can take the time to teach them and help them learn. While this will help you both have more fun while playing, it will also show your partner how patient you can be. I mean, teaching someone isn’t easy, that’s why not every badminton coach is a good one! But if you can keep it together(!), they will appreciate you showing them and may even lead to a successful partnership in the future!
You can play it outdoors (depending on the weather). If it’s good weather and you don’t want to be stuck inside, you can play it outside along with that romantic picnic in the park. Just grab a cheap outdoor badminton set and off you go. If you’re a bit more into it, Air Badminton has just been launched by the BWF! It’s effectively outdoor badminton where the shuttle isn’t hindered by the wind! And unlike tennis, you don’t need a huge court, you can set up almost anywhere and hit those shuttles!
Suitable for any age. Whether it’s puppy love or your golden wedding anniversary, badminton is easily accessible for any age group! This makes it a great choice for couples who have committed to being active together for their New Years Resolution or just couples who want to take up a new hobby in retirement. Where ever you lie on the age spectrum, badminton does not discriminate!
Sports Couples In Badminton
There are plenty of badminton couples out there! Aside from the ones pictured above, India’s superstar Saina Nehwal, who married Parupalli Kashyap and Chinese ace Chen Long, who married fellow singles player Wang Shixian.
I know more than a few badminton players who met on the court and subsequently married! It’s a goldmine of sports romance and a great sport for couples.
So there you go! If you’re looking at potential couples sports you can do together, badminton should certainly be at the top of your list! So if you haven’t tried it before, or your you’re just introducing it to your partner, give it a go as a valentines activity this valentines day! And when you become the next power couple in the sport, remember to thank me!
